3.11 Mixing the String Section

As we learned so far, the actual sequencing of the parts of a string orchestra plays an important role in the rendition process. The mixing process is equally important. When writing using a MIDI sequencer you will have to wear several hats at the same time: composer, arranger, performer, and mixing engineer. This final step is often overlooked by seasoned composers for acoustic ensembles. It is seen as something that is not pertinent to their area of expertise and taken care of by someone else later in the production process. While this approach would have worked a few years ago, things have changed considerably nowadays. More and more, you, the composer, will find yourself having to deliver a full demo or a full production without leaving your project studio. This will put you in charge of not only writing a great piece of music but also taking care of all the other production aspects. This is why the mixing aspect of a virtual orchestra is as important as any other step. As the mixing engineer, your main tasks are to place each instrument and section effectively in the right environment and to let each part or line come across as clearly as possible. These very important goals involve paying particular attention to three aspects of the mixing process: panning, equalization, and reverberation. Let’s analyze each step separately in order to gain a deeper knowledge of the mixing process for the virtual string orchestra.
